Our Chief Instructor
The Chairman and Chief Instructor for the Orchard Towers Dojo (and indeed the whole of South East, Middle East and Central Asia) is Shihan Peter Chong.

(Pictured with Sosai Masutatsu Oyama 1923-1994 the Founder of Kyokushin Karate worldwide.)

An 8th degree black belt, Shihan is also the recipient of the Public Service Medal (PBM) for his work with the communities of Singapore. He is the President of the Singapore Martial Arts Instructors Association and Advisor to the Singapore Karate-do Federation. Shihan is also a member of the Black Belt Hall of Fame, and is recognized and respected in many countries around the world.

A Partial History of Shihan's Training.
Shihan began his training in 1955, studying Chinese Martial Arts with first his father, and later his uncle. After a year in Tae Kwon Do and training in Judo and Boxing, a chance encounter led Shihan to Sosai Mas Oyama (sadly deceased in 1994).

So in 1965, set for a new adventure, Shihan left his native Singapore and moved to Japan to train full time under the Founder of Kyokushinkai Sosai Mas Oyama.

Practice was twice a day, six days a week, and training was harsh, sometimes even brutal. After one year, Shihan had to return to Singapore to deal with family issues. Once resolved, Shihan went straight back to Japan for more training. Such is his dedication to the Kyokushin way.

Training with Shihan
Shihan gives special advanced level and Instructor training on the last Wednesday of each month. In addition to this, special courses are organized through S.O.K.K. and are held periodically at different locations in Singapore.

Shihan personally oversees all gradings for Singapore, and thereby maintains the very high standard that is a trademark of Kyokushin Karate.
